Plant of the Week Coreopsis, Showy Penstemon & St. John's Wort (June 29 - July 5, 2008) Yellow is starting to show up in the wildflower patch. More subtle is the St Johnswort, which has clusters of 5-petaled flowers. Since the individual flowers bloom and fade at different times, the flower cluster can look a bit ragged. There are several varieties of St Johnswort. The one shown is not native to Minnesota, but has been naturalized here. It is said that many species of Hypericum (the St Johnsworts) can be harvested for herbal remedies. Maybe that's why people feel so good after walking through a prairie. The purple flower in the photo is one of the Penstemon flowers. They are called "beardtongue" because of either a furry lower lip, or because of coloring that looks furry. There are several species native to Minnesota, some are white, some pink or lavender, and different size of blooms.
